FAQ's
We often get a lot of questions from clients who wish to start their loc journey but are a little worried or apprehensive (it's okay! we totally understand this can be a scary experience, and that's why we are here to support you on your journey!) We thought we would answer some top frequently asked questions from our clients, which may help you below!
1) Q: "What are dreadlocks?"
A: Dreadlocks are a hairstyle formed by matting or braiding hair. Over time, the strands of hair become tightly knotted, creating a distinctive look.
2) Q: "How do I start my dreadlocks?"
A: There are several methods, including backcombing, twist and rip, and the free-form method. Research each to find what works best for your hair type and desired look but we do advise going to a professional loctician (like us!) to make sure you get the best results... We use the backcomb and crochet technique with NO other products.
3) Q: "How long does my hair need to be to start dreads?"
A: Generally, your hair should be at least 6 inches long to start the dreadlocking process.
4) Q: "Can anyone get dreadlocks?"
A: Yes, anyone with the appropriate hair length and texture can start dreadlocks. If your hair is a little thin / short, we can also add in hair extensions to add thickness and length, to help get your process started quicker!
5) Q: "How long does it take to form fully matured dreadlocks?"
A: It varies depending on your hair type, method, and maintenance routine. Typically, it takes anywhere from 6 months to a year for dreads to fully mature.
6) Q: "Do I need to wash my hair less often once I have dreadlocks?"
A: Not necessarily, you should still maintain regular hair hygiene. Depending on your scalp and hair type, you may need to adjust your washing routine. Some clients notice that after getting locs, they massively reduce their washing routine, as locs don't tend to look greasy like normal hair does.
7) Q: "How do I wash my hair with dreadlocks?"
A: Use a residue-free shampoo and focus on massaging your scalp while avoiding excessive manipulation of the dreads themselves.
8) Q: "Will my hair smell bad with dreadlocks?"
A: Proper hygiene and regular washing should prevent any unpleasant odors.
9) Q: "Can I dye my hair with dreadlocks?"
A: Yes, but be cautious as the dye may not distribute evenly throughout the dreadlocks. It's best to consult a professional experienced with dreadlocks.
10) Q: "How do I prevent my dreads from unraveling?"
A: Regular maintenance, such as palm rolling or crochet hooking, can help tighten loose hairs and prevent unraveling. We recommend to come back for a maintenance every 6-12 months AT LEAST, to ensure your locs stay healthy and tight.
11) Q: "Can I style my dreadlocks?"
A: Yes, you can style them in various ways once they've matured, including updos, braids, and beads.
12) Q: "How often should I get maintenance?"
A: It depends on your hair growth and the method used to start your dreads. Some people retwist every few weeks, while others do it less frequently (3-12 months), depending on how tidy they like their locs.
13) Q: "Are there any products I should avoid with dreadlocks?"
A: Avoid products containing heavy oils, waxes, or residues that can build up in your hair and cause issues.
14) Q: "How can I speed up the dreadlocking process?"
A: Regular maintenance, such as palm rolling and separating, can help accelerate the process.
15) Q: "Can I swim with dreadlocks?"
A: Yes, but we advise you wear a swim cap if possible, and you should rinse your hair with clean water afterward to remove any chlorine or salt which can dry your locs out if not washed off.
16) Q: "How do I deal with itching and scalp irritation?"
A: Tea tree oil or aloe vera gel can help soothe itching and irritation. Avoid scratching your scalp excessively. We also recommend this product to use in between washes which should help with itchiness: https://rawroots.eu/products/scalp-rescue-tonic
17) Q: "Can I undo my dreadlocks if I change my mind?"
A: Yes, although it may take time and effort to comb them out, especially if they're matured.
18) Q: "Do dreadlocks work for all hair textures?"
A: While dreadlocks can be achieved with most hair types, some textures may require different methods and maintenance routines.
19) Q: "Will having dreadlocks affect my job or professional image?"
A: It depends on your industry and workplace culture. Some may embrace diversity in hairstyles, while others may have stricter policies.
20) Q: "How do I maintain the health of my dreadlocks?"
A: Maintain your regular wash routine, palm roll every now and again (to help with any bumps) and ensure to have regular maintenance by a loc professional (like us!).
21) Q: "Can I get extensions for my hair?"
