Damaged Hair: Is It Good To Wear Synthetic Dreadlocks?

5 min read

Could synthetic locs give your hair a chance to rest and recover?

If your hair has been feeling dry, fragile or damaged from bleaching, heat styling, frequent washing or lots of daily manipulation, you might be wondering whether synthetic dreadlocks could be a good option.

The good news is that synthetic / temporary braid-in locs can be a lovely low-maintenance hairstyle that allows you to leave your natural hair alone for a while.

But there are a few important things to consider before getting them installed - especially if your hair is already damaged.

Let’s talk about it… 👇🏼

🌿 Why Are Synthetic Locs Considered a Protective Hairstyle?

There’s a reason synthetic dreadlocks are often described as a protective hairstyle.

When your natural hair is braided underneath synthetic locs, you’re generally doing much less to it day-to-day.

That means:

✨ Less heat styling

✨ Less brushing and combing

✨ Less pulling and manipulating

✨ Fewer styling products

✨ Less temptation to constantly change or restyle your hair

And sometimes, your hair simply needs a break.

If you regularly straighten your hair, brush it multiple times a day, use lots of styling products or wash it very frequently, having synthetic locs installed can help you step away from that daily routine.

Your natural hair is tucked away, and you can simply leave it alone and let it be!

🔥 A Break From Heat Styling

One of the biggest benefits for people with damaged hair can be taking a break from heat.

If you normally reach for your straighteners, curling wand or hairdryer to make your hair look the way you want it to, synthetic locs can completely change your routine.

Your locs are already styled.

You wake up and you’re ready to go!😉

No straightening.

No curling.

No trying to tame frizz every morning.

And most importantly, no repeated heat being applied to already fragile hair.

Giving your hair a break from heat can be a really positive change if heat styling has contributed to dryness or breakage.

🧴 Less Washing & Less Manipulation

Synthetic locs also tend to mean less frequent washing and much less manipulation of your natural hair.

You obviously still need to keep your scalp clean and healthy - synthetic locs don’t mean ignoring your scalp!

But you may find that you don’t need to wash your hair as frequently as you did when wearing it loose.

And because you can’t brush or comb your natural hair in the usual way, you aren’t constantly pulling through knots and tangles.

For some people, this can make a huge difference to how their hair feels.

Your hair gets a little holiday. 🌿

💫 But Is It Safe If Your Hair Is Already Damaged?

This is where we need to be a little more careful.

If your hair has been damaged by bleaching, colouring, heat or previous chemical treatments, synthetic locs may still be an option - but it depends on the condition of your hair.

If your hair is extremely fragile, breaking easily or already struggling to support its own weight, adding extensions may put too much additional strain on it.

Synthetic locs have weight.

And the longer, thicker and heavier the locs are, the more weight your natural hair has to support.

So if your hair is severely damaged, synthetic locs may not be the right choice just yet.

If you’re unsure, please speak to a professional loctician before having them installed!

We can look at your hair during a free consultation, assess its condition and talk through what would be suitable for you.

🌸 The Installation Makes ALL the Difference

This is probably one of the most important things to remember.

Synthetic locs can be a wonderful low-maintenance style - but they need to be installed correctly.

You don’t want:

❌ Locs that are too heavy

❌ Excessively long extensions

❌ Sections that are too small

❌ Braids that are installed too tightly

❌ Too much tension around the roots

All of these things can put unnecessary stress on your natural hair.

And if your hair is already damaged, that extra tension can potentially lead to further breakage.

That’s why choosing someone who understands synthetic loc installation and knows how to work with different hair types and conditions is so important.

✂️ Taking Your Synthetic Locs Out? Be Gentle!

Once you’ve worn your synthetic locs for several months, you might decide it’s time for a change.

And just as important as installing them correctly is taking them out correctly.

Don’t rush through the removal process or pull at your natural hair.

After several months of being tucked away, you’ll naturally have some shed hair that would normally have fallen out during brushing and washing. So don’t panic when you see hair coming out during removal!

If you’re unsure about removing your locs yourself, we’re always happy to help or advise you.

And if you’re planning to put your synthetic locs back in, we recommend giving your hair and scalp at least a little time to rest between installations. 🌸

💛 What Do Our Clients Say?

We’ve had clients tell us that their hair feels healthier, softer and stronger after spending several months wearing their synthetic locs!

Of course, everyone’s hair is different - and synthetic locs aren’t a magic cure for damaged hair.

But when they’re correctly installed, properly cared for and suitable for your hair, they can provide a wonderful opportunity to step away from heat, excessive styling and daily manipulation.

And sometimes that’s exactly what your hair needs. 🌿

🧡 Give Your Hair a Little Break

If your hair has been through a lot lately, synthetic locs could be a beautiful way to change your style while giving yourself a break from the daily maintenance you’re used to.

Just remember:

✅ Synthetic locs can reduce daily manipulation and heat styling

✅ Your scalp still needs regular care and cleansing

✅ Damaged hair needs to be assessed before adding extensions

✅ Avoid locs that are excessively heavy or installed too tightly

✅ Professional installation can help minimise unnecessary tension

✅ Remove your locs carefully to avoid unnecessary pulling and breakage

✅ Give your hair and scalp some time to rest between installations

And if you’re not sure whether your hair is suitable, come and have a chat with us. 💛

We can take a look at your hair, talk through your options and help you find an installation that works for you.
