Why Regular Maintenance Is a Game-Changer for Your Dreads

You’ve probably heard it before: dreadlocks are the “set-it-and-forget-it” hairstyle, right? Just get them installed and that's it, done...

Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? But while dreads are low-maintenance, they’re not no-maintenance.

At Dreadit, we know that a bit of care goes a long way in keeping your locs looking and feeling their best!

What is maintenance?

At Dreadit, we use a crochet-hook method that tightens your roots and smooths out loose hairs. This keeps your locs looking fresh and helps build a strong, healthy structure over time. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about helping your hair thrive.

When your locs are new (0–6 months)

The early months are an exciting time, but they can also be a bit messy. Loose hairs, loops, bumps - all completely normal. Around month 2 or 3, it’s a great time to book your first maintenance session. We’ll help shape and secure your locs as they begin to mature. Using a good tightening spray and some palm rolling, can make a real difference in how your locs settle.

Long-term care: roots matter

As your hair grows, new hair at the root doesn’t always lock on its own. If left for too long, roots can weaken or merge with other locs, making them harder to manage (and potentially more prone to breakage). Regular maintenance helps avoid these issues, keeps your scalp healthy, and gives your locs the strength to last.

How often should you come in?

If you like a tidy, well-defined look, we recommend maintenance every 3 to 4 months. If you prefer a more relaxed or natural look, 4 to 8 months is fine. For brand-new locs, book your first session around the 2-month mark so we can guide them as they form.

Extra Tips to Keep Your Locs Thriving

Step

Why It Matters

Cleanse regularly

Use a residue-free (ideally a dreadlocks specific) shampoo every 1–2 weeks to keep your scalp fresh and your locs light and healthy.

Moisturise wisely

A little jojoba or argan oil goes a long way in keeping your hair soft and preventing dryness.

Gentle palm-rolling

When your locs are new, regularly palm rolling them and applying a natural dreadlock tightening spray can help maintain their shape and minimize bumps, promoting neat and healthy formation.

Skip heavy products

Avoid waxes and thick creams that can cause buildup. Stick to lightweight, water-based options.

Go gentle on your roots

Don’t pull your dreadlocks too tight with hairbands etc. Gentle is key to avoiding thinning or damage.
